| Saturday Night |
[May. 10th, 2009|10:03 am] |
Last night after dinner I decided to walk to town for the train to the gig, and so took my new 70-300mm lens out on a short expedition. I was lucky with the light; but luckier still to find a Moorhen's nest, complete with chicks, as well as seeing the Black Swan I've seen before but half-believed was a delusion, and the heron which has (fairly recently, I think) taken up residence on the canal.
Somewhat less fortunately, I forgot, not having had a long lens for a while, that 300mm is too long to hand-hold unless you have very good light so some of the photos aren't very satisfactory. Ho hum, live and learn.
Then is was on to the conincidentally-named Black Swan pub in York for beers and live music provided by Los Yobos, where a couple of former colleagues I haven't seen for ages were in the audience, which was nice. |

..which has resulted in me finishing watching Battlestar Galactica Season 4, which was rather good, although I am all lonesome and last night I had pizza and beer for dinner like a sad bachelor.
In other news, does anyone fancy seeing my mate Pete's Western Swing band tomorrow in York? It's a in a pub that does very decent ales, if that makes a difference. |

| In which a hazerdous chemical contaminates your correspondant's basement |
[Mar. 27th, 2009|09:26 am] |
I proffer my apologies for the extended time since last I added to this journal, but recently I have been dealing with a dangerous chemical leaking into my underground lairbasement workshop.
I only noted this disquieting incident when I sent my manservant down to retrieve my Mr Stanley's Replaceable-Blade Incision Tool from the main tool-chest, and he reported the floor was awash with it. Fortuitously, he was admirably able to withstand the fumes for sufficient time to report the situation, before I sent him to bed with a hot toddy and some educational etchings to aid his recovery.
Donning my protective garments, I ventured downstairs to assess the situation, and dire indeed it proved to be. I was forced to dispose of several storage-containers that were saturated in the insidious substance, and a general clear-out ensued. Unable, of course, to entrust the delicate instrumentation to mere stevedores, I was obliged to effect much of the labour myself.
I had some hope that the leakage was a singular incident—perhaps a result of the melting of the solid form of the substance, a large quantity of which was recently deposited in the street, presumably by some ne'er-do-well in the under-the-counter employ of a disreputable chemical firm—but sadly the substance reappeared regularly since, entailing the donning of the protective garmentry and the use of specialised disposal and handling tools on an almost daily basis.
I have as yet been unable to locate the source of the ingress of the chemical. If I could prevail upon you to pass on any useful advice via the telegraph form below, I would be much indebted. |

| LARP kit ordering |
[Mar. 16th, 2009|02:11 pm] |
Re a previous post, I shall be putting the order in tonight, so the Stuff™ has plenty of time to get here before Maelstrom Event 1.
sarahlascelles, did you get what you wanted at the re-enactment fair? and if not, do you still want me to order it for you bearing in mind I have no idea when I will see you next?
EDIT: Ordered. The mass was less than 7Kg so just 15€ between the four of us for delivery. Which is nice. I'll get back to you all (you know who you are) when I know what exchange rate it's worked out as. |

Ah, lunchtime fun. Michael Sheard was a top bloke, actually, I met him at a signing once and he was lovely. |

| LARP kit from Germany |
[Mar. 8th, 2009|03:05 pm] |
I'm putting in an order from Mysticum in Germany sometime in the next week; The shipping is done on weight but the lowest category is "less than 10Kg" so if anyone wants to order anything and split the postage, drop me a line. |

| New phone |
[Feb. 5th, 2009|02:08 pm] |
went for the cheapest Nokia (2630) which had bluetooth in the end...
In related news, does anyone want a T-Mobile PAYG SIM with a tenner on it? |

| My mobile has died |
[Feb. 4th, 2009|01:15 pm] |
I've had it over 6 years so it's had a good run. Best to bear in mind that I am harder to contact for the next couple of days.
Edit: any suggestions for a new one? A half-way decent camera would be nice, as would GPS (although I note that some of the GPS units on phones appear to regard TomTom-style navigation as something that requires subscription, which frankly can sod off. I don't mind paying for map updates but just to use it?) |

We had some "carollers" last night. Is it just me or is one verse of We Wish You a Merry Christmas a bit of a desultory effort? |

| Hedge fund short-sellers take £18bn loss |
[Oct. 29th, 2008|01:40 pm] |
Some German hedge-fund short-sellers have lost £18bn, the poor dears, leading to the BBC's finest paragraph in quite some time:
" It meant that because Porsche had not declared the proportion of VW shares it controlled, traders may have been indirectly and inadvertently borrowing shares from Porsche, selling them to Porsche, buying them back from Porsche and then returning them to Porsche."
Genius. |

| Impending retirement |
[Oct. 1st, 2008|04:56 pm] |
So, it's my birthday on Friday. I shall be 31. benethyarr's ressurrection of the pub meet is also on Friday, so I will be there having Birthday Drinks. Huzzah!
In other news, it turns out that the drawback of buying a white cotton tablecloth that can be cleaned at 95°C (368.15K) is that, apparently, you have to clean it at 95° or it looks dead grubby. |

| Magnets! get yer magnets! |
[Aug. 29th, 2008|09:28 am] |
Can anyone think of a use for 8 1cm×3m plastic magnets?
It seems a shame to chuck them...
EDIT: In response to questions, yes, 1cm by 3metres (approx), they're like the magnetic poetry things only longer. Currently used to hold some out of date posters to a frame for presentations.
Come to think of it, the posters are made of wipe-clean plastic and are blank on one side.
